Overcoming Challenges on the Data Analytics Journey

In September, Qlarion hosted the second Virginia Data Revolution event in Richmond. This lunchtime event focused on the data analytics journey and the challenges many state and local government organizations face when starting or sustaining data analytic projects.  The distinguished panel included:

  • Michael Leahy, Secretary, Department of Information Technology, State of Maryland
  • Carlos Rivero, Chief Data Officer, Commonwealth of Virginia
  • Peter Aiken, Founding Director and Owner, Data Blueprint and Associate Professor at VCU
  • Moderator: Tony Fung, former Deputy Secretary of Technology for the Commonwealth of Virginia

The panel shared their insights and lessons learned on getting analytic projects off the ground and generating value from those projects that are underway. Specifically, Peter Aiken discussed how to get buy-in and resources from upper management, and identifying funding sources for data analytic projects. Michael Leahy discussed the legal regulations that govern data sharing and his success setting up Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) and data use agreements in Maryland. And finally, Carlos Rivero, the new CDO in Virginia, explained his vision for data analytics and data sharing for the Commonwealth.
