A Recap of the Governor's Data Analytics Summit

Data analytics is changing our state for the better, and we need to double down on our investments. That was the resounding message from Governor McAuliffe and other state leaders at the Governor’s Data Analytics Summit a few weeks ago.

During his remarks to the conference audience (a gathering of state and local government employees, leaders from analytics solution providers, and data science experts) McAuliffe highlighted a number of results of his administration’s commitment to data analytics in Virginia:

“We ended veteran homelessness, first state in America to do that. We did that because of the data analytics that we did on veteran homelessness. I’m now using it to deal with the opioid crisis that we have here in Virginia,” said the governor.

Data analytics is not only helping state agencies support the citizens that depend on them, it’s also fueling Virginia’s economic growth. Data analytics, the governor explained, is a critical element in Virginia’s “new economy.” As our state begins to rely less on jobs generated by the federal government and the military, data analytics companies will drive both job creation and positive social change in the public sector. By forging partnerships with analytics solutions providers, the state is positioning itself to be a national leader in the analytics space.

The governor also emphasized the need to experiment, innovate, and push the boundaries of data-driven government: “I want you to go back to your agencies and take what you learn and shake it up a little. Go back and try it. Even if it doesn’t work, try it. If your boss doesn’t want you to, tell them to call me. We can’t move Virginia forward by sitting still.”
